Module #10 – Anxiety and Children

Anxious Child

One of the tricky things about getting children to cope with anxiety effectively is they typically have learned to work hard at avoiding what they think is “causing” their fear. Avoidance is reinforcing; it works, and increases the likelihood that avoidance will be utilized next time. It’s better to start developing stress recognition skills now so they can express themselves and manage their stress before they are in “flight or fight” mode and can no longer access their rational thinking brain.

“Is there a more universal topic of human nature than this one? All kids deal with anxiety, and learning how to manage the stressors of life is one of the most important life skills you can give your kids. In this easy to understand video, Brad teaches parents, with easy instructions, how to equip kids with better coping skills. Inner peace. What a gift.”

Anxiety and Children Course Learning Objectives

After completing the course, the participant will be able to:

1.) Identify at least three categories of coping tools that can used to reduce anxiety and site specific examples.

2.) Utilize a menu of stress triggers and stress signs to help realize that an anxiety response is occurring before it gets unmanageable.

3.) Implement a 1-5 scale strategy to help recognize gradations in emotional response and map out how a person looks, what they can do, and how the body tells the person that an emotional response is occurring before it gets out of control.

4.) Teach thinking skills using supplied documents to help a child use their self-talk as a coping skill and recognize thinking errors that contribute to unnecessary over-reactions.

5.) Recognize at least two types of lifestyle adjustments that can be made to help prevent the occurrence of a big stress response by regular practice and maintaining a regimen of self-care that helps a person be more relaxed in general.
